Romeo and Juliet in Slovenia –
In the footsteps of Veronika Deseniška in Jurklošter near Laško, with Špela Hribernik – in the role of the historical Veronika – and local expert Janko Cesar.
About an impossible love in the 15th century: a witch trial that ended in acquittal, about sanctuary in hidden rooms of the Carthusian monastery Jurklošter, to which a historical document from the Vatican could also lead, about a brutal contract killing, and about the continued life of Veronika Deseniška in literary prizes, musicals and a Slovenian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.
Research conducted as part of the ‘Jugend schreibt’ (Youth Writes) project with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung/FAZ, by Anja Oblak, Amaya Kragolnik and Evita Kranjec from Celje.
